For more information on this, see my Cub Scout Basic Training Flyer.

Scout Outdoor Day at Camp Don - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2005 - The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance is hosting this event at Camp Don in Palo Duro Canyon.  This event's purpose is to give youth the chance to experience the wonders of nature firsthand.  This is an educational experience in shooting sports, fishing, trapping, archery, etc.  All registered Scouts are invited to participate.  Times and cost to be announced later.  For more info, contact cmatthew@bsamail.org

Philmont Family Weekend - Friday noon through noon on Sunday, Sept. 30th thru November 2nd  --
Camp out in Philmont's tents in Tent City (a canvas tent, 2 metal cots, with light & electricity furnished) for $10.00 per tent for the weekend, or bring an RV (no hookups) for $15.00/weekend.  I don't know if Quad-plex housing is available this year.  Check with the Scout Center at 358-6500 for availability details.
This year there are special events (new and improved scavenger hunt, crafts, museum tours, horseback riding), games, and training activities (Orienteering Course, Leader Basic Skills), Villa Philmonte tour, campfire with brandings, and a Cracker Barrel are planned this year.
Philmont Family Weekend Patch (an optional fee) is $3.00.
Saturday's all-you-can-eat breakfast is $6.50 per person, Saturday night's Mexican dinner is $8.50 per person, and Sunday morning's breakfast is $6.50 per person -- you can register for one or all meals. The "meals option" registration deadline is Sept. 3rd. The Council is cooking all three of these meals this year, so they should be better than last year's.
Or you can always go into town (just a few miles north) to eat.
The Camp Registration Form and fees are due into the Scout Center by Friday, September 3rd (if you want to eat at Philmont's Cafeteria), or by Wednesday, September 15th if you just want to camp out and prepare your own food or eat in town. Call the Scout Center at 358-67500 for more information. The registration form is available at the Golden Spread Council.
Call Chrystene Matthews at the Scout Center at 358-6500 for more details, or e-mail her at cmatthew@bsamail.org
FYI, if you or your Scout or his siblings want to do crafts (they're neat, I even did some one year), there is a small fee ($2 to $8, to be paid there) to cover the cost of craft supplies.

October, 2005

Popcorn Sales Began - Saturday, Oct 1st.  See my Popcorn Sales Notes for hints, tips and details. This is your scouting unit's main fund raising activity for the whole year, as we will receive a 35% commission on gross sales, if you don't opt for prizes.

Roundtable - Thursday, October 6th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scout Service Center. Learn all about all of the next month's (November, 2005) Cub Scout activities and programs. It's free.

Golden Eagle District Committee meeting -- Thursday, October 13th at the Scout Center from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Spook-O-Ree - Saturday, October 15th and 22nd at Camp Don. This has been a Golden Spread Council Fall tradition for over 20 years!  A day of fun, games, and adventure at Camp Don for all Cub Scouts and Webelos.
Scouts are $5.00 per boy (this is for a patch, program supplies, refreshments and insurance). Extra patches are $2.00.
T-shirts are available by pre-registration and pre-payment only; cost is $8.00. Indicate size on order form.
You can still register directly at the Scout Center for the September 23rd date.  In order to be assured of getting our choice of weekend we turned our registration form and money in to the Scout Center on September 16th. Be sure to tell them your son is with "Pack 1" because we're registering Pack 1 and Pack 99 on the same form.
It is best to car pool down to Camp Don, with all your boys going at the same time. If you have a conflict with this, be sure to inform your Den Leader in advance.
This event usually starts around noon.
Earn some Scout advancements and have some cool Fall fun!
This is a "rain or shine" event, so if it looks like rain bring rain gear.
Packs can go on one weekend only -- the 1st or the 2nd weekend, but not both.
This event is for Scouts only until 6:00 pm, but after 6:00 you can bring the whole family down to Camp Don for dinner (dinner begins at 6:10 pm, with more night activities to follow). Parents can bring a picnic dinner, or food is available (hamburgers, a drink, and dessert) at the extra cost of $4.00 per person.
Pumpkin painting will be available.  You can bring your own pumpkin, or buy one there for $1.00 (FYI, buying one there is the best deal).
Parents and siblings from 6:00 p.m. on are free.
After 6:00 p.m. you can come and go as you like.
