These notes relate specifically to the 2003 Webelos Camp and are from my discussions with Richard Todd, Starla Ross, and Bob Altman at the Scout Center.  Bob was in overall charge of all Scout Camps in the summer of 2003.  Scott and Starla Ross' troop is Troop 10; their boys bridged from Pack 1.  However, these notes are generally good info for all Webelos Camps (and other camps) regardless of the year.

Tiger Cub Camp and Cub Scout Day Camp information is posted near the bottom of this page.

WEBELOS CAMP

Cost at Camp Don is $30.00 per adult; $55.00 per Scout.  Other camp locations are usually cheaper. If the Pack has enough money, we'll pay for the adults -- if not, then the adults pay for themselves. Registrations are due to be turned into the Scout Center at least two (2) weeks before the Camp.  That means the registration forms are generally due in by mid-June.

Camp fees for Scouts that sold $300 or more in popcorn this year are paid for by the Pack.

Camp Don's check in time is Friday between 1:00 and 1:30 pm.

Event times on Friday:

1:00 pm to 1:30 is check in.
1:00 to 2:30 is time for medical review (parents -- make sure your Scout's medical form is filled out before you get there; it's on your Webelos Camp Registration Form), swim test, campsite setup, etc.
2:30 to 5:00 is leader meeting and activity sessions for the boys.
5:00 to 6:00 is Patrol Time (whatever that is, probably a time for our patrols to plan/play a group activity, set up tents, etc.).
6:00 to 7:00 - Flag Ceremony and dinner
7:00 to 8:00 - Patrol Time
8:00 to 9:30 - Cracker barrel and Leaders' Questions & Answers
10:00 pm to 6:30 am is quiet time.

Event times on Saturday and Sunday will be posted at Camp Don and handed out at Leaders' meetings.

Each Scout should eat lunch prior to arriving at Camp Don on Friday.

There will be at least 1 mile of walking per day, so wear good hiking shoes and cool clothes.

There must to be 1 adult Scout leader for each 4 Scouts, and at least 2 adult leaders minimum.

The creek is off limits because of safety concerns.

The buddy system is to be used at all times.

Any prescription medicines that need to be taken into the Camp and taken by a Scout is that Scout's responsibility.  If an adult leader wants to accept that responsibility for a Scout -- after consultation with the Scout's parents -- that is OK, but talk to your adult leader first.

Shoes are to be worn at all time except in the showers (flip flops are a good idea in the showers).  The showers are located by the swimming pool, which will be open; it is planned for swimming twice per day on Saturday (weather permitting).

Sunday is a "wet day" -- so come prepare to be wet.

Visitors are welcome at any time, but the must sign in at the Scout Admin Building, and Scouts cannot leave camp without a parent's written permission.  If a visitor is going to eat at camp then 24-hours advance notice is required.  Visitor's Day and Family Night is Saturday beginning at 7:00 pm; don't come early as the Scouts will be engaged in preparations for Scout Night, and no kids can leave that night.  The Visitors/Family Campfire program begins at 8:30 pm.  Scouts leave on Sunday after 5:00 pm.

The emergency phone number at the camp is 622-0003.

Classes to be taught change from year to year, but usually are:

Readyman and/or First Aid
Aquanaut
BB's
Archery
Craftsman
Fishing (depending upon water level)
Geologist
Forrester
Outdoorsman

Usually two (2) classes will be taught on Friday, 6 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday.

Wear your Class A uniforms to meals and Flag Ceremonies.  Camp t-shirt at other times.

Take a day pack to breakfast with towels, swim suit, water, sun tan lotion, medications, etc.  Check the Pack 1 handy camping check list.  Each Scout's day pack is his responsibility, not the leaders.

Adults -- "dress for camp, not the beach."  Wear sensible shoes, shirts, etc.

REGISTRATION INFO FOR ALL CAMPS

Bob said that all Scouts attending any and all summer camps -- be it Scout Day Camp, Webelos Camp, or this week's Tiger Twilight Camp -- have two options:

First, each Scout can fill out their registration form, then give their camp registration fee (if they didn't earn their camp fee through popcorn sales) plus their registration forms to their Den/Patrol Leaders, who will then take all the forms and a Camp Pack Registration "summary form" to the Scout Center.  This way we can register as a Pack and attend camp as a Pack.  (Debbie and Susan -- I got copies of the summary form today.)

The second option, which is not as good an option in my opinion, is for all Scouts to individually register directly with the Scout Center.  This option can make it difficult to attend a camp with your own Den or Patrol unless the adult registering the Scout knows which weekend to register for.  The office staff will try to help determine which weekend that is, but frankly some adults still don't even know which Pack their child is in, much less which weekend to register for.  And camping with your friends is at least half the fun of cub scout camping -- doing fun things with your friends and adult leaders.

So, I suggest that each Webelo Scout fill out their registration form and turn that form in to their Webelos Leaders.  This needs to be done well before mid-June. Camp begins at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and ends not later than 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Some years we are out earlier, by 10:00 am or noon.

Likewise, I suggest that each Cub Scout fill out their day camp registration form and turn that form in to Den Leaders.  FYI, the date we are going to go to Cub Scout Day Camp has to be selected very early one; we usually do that at the August Pack Committee meeting each year.  The Webelos choices are usually in July if you want to go to Camp Don.  In any event, the choice of which date to go to needs to be made well before the end of the month before Camp begins, and the forms turned in by mid-June.  Pick up some extra Day Camp registration forms, if anyone needs one.

TIGER CUB CAMP

As to Tiger Cub Twilight Camp (which is Thursday and Friday and in 2003 cost $20.00 per Scout), if time is short I suggest that each Tiger Cub fill out their registration form and turn that form in to the Scout Center.  If the Center tries to charge a $10.00 late fee tell them that Bob said that the late fee would be waived for Tiger Cubs because these Scouts registered so late in the year.  Bob also said that no Scout will be turned away, there are still "camping spaces" available (FYI, this is an evening camp from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Camp Don; it is not an overnight camp).

INFO ON ADDITIONAL CUB SCOUT DAY CAMPS IN AMARILLO

The Scouts sometimes put on additional Cub Scout Day Camps in Amarillo.  We had one at Forest Hills Park from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m. in June and another at Hines Park from 9:00 am to 4:00 p.m. in June.  Fridays include a special outing to Camp Don for swimming, fishing, archery, and BB guns.  All Scouts may attend (1st grade thru 5th grades); cost was $15.00 per person.  Registration will be each Monday of the camp week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the park.  Applications are also available for pre-registration at the Scout Center, 401 Tascosa Road.  For more information, call the Center at 358-6500.  Every Scout attending these camps (and all camps) will usually receive a t-shirt.  Additionally, at camps lunch and snacks will be provided.

All Scouts will have tons of fun at every camp!

Finally, camp scholarships are available for all camps.  Check with the Scout Center for details.

PACK 1 PRE-CAMP MEETING

You need to have one, for sure!  Do it early.
